He watched the pale beauty, trailed by those who hated prettiness in any form. It didn’t take them long to despoil the fragile form. No one stopped it. Not even the teachers. The young man bore it silently, even when questioned. Suddenly names were called to report to the office.
They stood up. The shorter hesitated at the door, until the taller stepped aside.
“I want you boys to tutelage each other. Daniel, you’ll need Darren’s help to pass this year, and your reputation has preceded you. Protect him.”
Darren glanced at him, his head bowed.
Daniel nodded. “I will.”
