"Love can move you take you deeper everytime and make the darkest moments feel like heaven's come alive..."
But was the same thing true for unrequited love? For love that you could never have, did you still feel the same way? Daniel Jones was sure that you didn't. He felt like his heart had been ripped out of his chest and stomped on. Even though the person he was in love with had no idea what he was doing to him. Yes he, that's right. He as in Darren Hayes. Darren Hayes as in Daniel's best friend, band mate, and soulmate. The man was like a brother to him. Daniel sighed when he thought about the cold blue eyes that stared back at him when he finally got up his nerve to tell Darren the truth. Darren didn't like that truth and ignored it for the next year and half. Finally he had announced that he was leaving the band. That was five months ago, today. Daniel was in tears when he heard the news, from Ben. Darren didn't even have the balls to tell Daniel himself.
Daniel laid back on his couch and starred at the picture in his hands. It was of him and Darren. Darren smiling happily with his arm around Daniel. He looked so happy, that was the year before Daniel had come clean with him. Everything was going smoothly that year, for Darren anyway. Daniel was being torn inside out keeping his feelings hidden. Though Darren was always thought to be the emotional one, Daniel was actually just as emotional as Darren. He thought more on his feelings than Darren, that was the difference.
Daniel's phone rang snapping him out of his daze. He answered the phone, excepting to hear Ben or Karl.
"Yea," Daniel said.
"Hi, Jonesy?" The voice said unsure of themselves.
Daniel frowned. No one was allowed to call him by that name since Darren had left the band. Daniel wouldn't let them. He had a big falling out with Lee once because of it, and now Lee had left the band.
"Who is this?" Daniel demanded to know, "No one calls me Jonesy."
"This is Darren," the voice said.
"Darren?!" Daniel nearly screamed, "How have you been?"
"I'm good," Darren said, "and yourself?"
"Fine." Daniel's answer came coldly.
Memories suddenly began flashing by his face like it was yesterday. Visions of Darren slamming doors in his face, screaming at him, calling him all sorts of names. Picture frames that Darren had broken in many tantrums, sat in a box in Daniel's house. They haunted him, and he didn't make an effort to get rid of the pictures. Darren's big liquid blue eyes were burned into Daniel's memory. He saw them and wanted to cry out loud.
"I...I miss you." Darren said quietly.
Daniel was speechless. A lyric entered his mind, "I'll be courageous if you can pretend that you've forgiven me." He pushed the song out of his mind.
"I..uh...I miss you too Daz." Daniel replied.
"Do you?" Darren asked, "Are you still upset with me?"
Daniel sighed, "Yes. Why didn't you call me? Why didn't you tell me?"
Darren laughed slightly, "I was afraid to."
"Why?" Daniel asked, "Why would you be afraid to tell me anything?"
Darren shook his head and then remembered he was on the telephone, "I don't know."
Daniel knew that he had shook his head. It was like Darren to do that. To forget that he was even on the telephone. To close his eyes and image the person that he was speaking to.
"Darren..." Daniel began, "why did you leave?"
Darren sighed, "I just couldn't deal with it."
"I'm sorry," Daniel said quietly, "I know I was the reason that you left. And I feel terrible. I didn't mean to run you away."
"You didn't," Darren quickly assured him, "I ran from my problems, not you Jones- Daniel."
"You can call me Jonesy," Daniel said, "I haven't heard you say that name in a year."
Darren smiled, "It's been a year since I called you Jonesy?"
Daniel felt sad at the reality of it. "Yes. You were mad at me...and didn't call me Jonesy since...since I told you."
Darren's smile faded, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything by..."
"No I understand why." Daniel cut him off, "So...how is everything going for you? Where do you stay now?"
"Jonesy, I don't feel like skipping around the subject here," Darren said sternly, "I didn't call to discuss the weather with you. Our friendship is much too tainted to do that now. I called to tell you something...I called to..."
Darren trailed off, as if this was the hardest thing he's done. Daniel was confused, and anxious. He tried not to think of the impossible. He tried his hardest not to put himself up for a big fall.
"What is it, Daz?" Daniel asked.
"I called to tell you that I love you," Darren said.
Daniel waited for an explaination. He didn't want to jump to conclusions, although this was all the proof he needed.
"I was afraid," Darren continued, "but...I did love you. I still do even more so than before. I just could't say it. I was too afraid that I would disappoint you...and..."
"Disappoint me?" Daniel repeated. "You could never disappoint me."
"Daniel I think I need to come over," Darren said.
"Where are you?" Daniel asked.
"I'm at my mum's place," Darren said, "for the week."
"Okay if you want to come over you can." Daniel said.
"I want to see you," Darren blurted without thinking, "I mean..."
"I want to see you too," Daniel smiled weakly, "you're beautiful and I haven't been able to lay my eyes on your gorgeous body for five months. Just imagine all those bottled-up feelings saved for five months. Gawd the things I could do to you..."
Darren made a noise, "God Danny don't say things like that. I won't be able to walk properly."
Daniel giggled, "I'm so glad that you called. I thought I'd never hear from you again."
"I know, I talked to Ben," Darren said with guilt in his voice, "Ben told me all about it. He called me the next week and cursed me out for leaving the band. Told me how bad it hurt you, and he knew what went on between us."
"I told Ben about...us," Daniel said, "well about my feelings towards you."
Darren nodded. "I really do have to start remembering that you can't see me."
Daniel laughed, "When are you coming to visit me?"
"Soon," Darren said, "I want it to be a suprise."
Daniel smiled, "What if I'm not home?"
"Don't worry Jonesy," Darren answered, "I have to go now, mum is back from the store. She wants some help with her things."
"Bye Daz." Daniel said.
"Goodbye, Jonesy." Darren said, "I can't wait to see you."
As soon as Daniel hung up the phone he raced to the bathroom to groom himself. He wanted to be decent when Darren got there. The name rolled through his head again. Darren was coming to see him after five long months. After almost an entire year of not speaking to him unless it was absolutely necessary. It broke Daniel's heart when Darren pushed him away, and he was going to come and apologize. Daniel wondered to himself why he was going to forgive Darren so easily. Love made you do crazy things. Darren had been a jerk, to say the least.
Daniel pushed these nasty thoughts out of his head, as he usually did and began to brush his dark blonde hair. He brushed his teeth again for the third time that day. And it wasn't because he expected to get anything from Darren. He just liked to brush his teeth, it was a weird little thing that he did. No one thought much of it. He left on his torn blue jeans and his droopy white T-shirt. He left his feet bare, hopefully Darren wouldn't want to go anywhere. He wasn't exactly dressed for an outting.
When the doorbell rang Daniel was still in the bathroom fixing himself up. He went to the door. He straightnened his shirt and brushed back his hair once more before opening the door. He stared back at Darren, the dark haired man had lost a lot of weight. Daniel gaped at him in disbelief. He was so thin. He was dressed in black from head to toe, in a pair of black stretch denim blue jeans, a black cotton t-shirt and black sneakers. He smiled at Darren and gave him a glance over.
"Come on in." Daniel managed to say after the two men looked each other over.
Darren entered the house and looked at the pictures on the wall. Most were the same, but the others that were up were now down, because Darren tore them down before he'd left Australia.
"Your place looks nice." Darren said politely.
"Thanks," Daniel said, "I tried to piece back the pictures you...umm...thanks. Do you want something to drink or anything? Something to eat?"
"No I'm on a diet," Darren said, "do you have any mineral water?"
Daniel nodded and went into the kitchen, "Why are you on a diet? You look very slim since the last time I saw you."
"I am smaller," Darren said, "I'm not on a diet to get thin. I'm just watching what I eat and things like that."
"Why did you get so thin?" Daniel asked handing him the bottled water.
Darren put his hand on his neck, as if he were massaging a sore ache, "I was depressed."
"Where were you staying?" Daniel asked.
"In Washington." Darren said bracing himself for the angry yells to come.
"Washington?!" Daniel cried, "That's so far away. Do you know that even your parents didn't know where you were?"
Darren nodded, "I know, but I didn't want them to know. I didn't want anyone to know where I was."
Daniel sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, "Darren that's insane. You can't leave and not let your mother know that you are okay. It's just cruel.Your mother loves you so much that it was heartbreaking when she'd ask if I heard from you."
"I know Daniel," Darren replied, "but I did call my sister and told her to tell them I was okay."
"Oh that makes up for it then." Daniel said sarcastically.
"Daniel...you know I would never do that purposely," Darren was hurt, "hurt my mother. I would never do something like that. I just needed time for me."
Daniel shook his head, "You you you. It's always about you. Darren haven't you noticed how completely self-absorbed you've become?"
Darren sighed, "Yes. That is why I went away. I had to find out things about myself. I couldn't just wait until someone finally pointed out my flaws."
Daniel groaned, "God...do you think everyone is just going to forgive you?"
Darren shook his head, "No. I just want you to forgive me. I'm not worried about everyone else."
Daniel looked at Darren wondering if he was telling the truth. The back of his mind screamed do not forgive him, but Daniel knew that he would. He couldn't hold a grudge against anyone, and Darren was no exception to the rule.
"Do you forgive me, Jonesy?" Darren asked.
Daniel sighed, "Do you know how bad you hurt me?"
Darren nodded, "I'm sorry. I was just afraid."
Daniel pulled Darren in close for a tight hug. He breathed in slowly, realizing that he wanting to be this close to Darren for years.
"I accept your apology," Daniel said kissing Darren on top of his head, "and I forgive you."
Darren smiled into Daniel's chest. He moved his hands along Daniel's strong back and then hugged Daniel closer.
"Thank you Danny," Darren whispered, "that means a lot to me."
"Dazza." Daniel whispered, "Is there going to be...an us?"
Darren looked up at the beautiful man holding him. Darren pulled Daniel's face to his and kissed him softly and gently.
"There is always going to be an us." Darren said.
