If Tomorrow Never Comes by Stina

(Disclaimed: 'If Tomorrow Never Comes', Garth Brooks)

"You can't..."

"Oh shut up. Don't tell me what to do or not to do."

"You know what Darren? I am glad I won't see you the next two days."

"Ditto, Daniel. Ditto."

With a BANG Darren closed his suitcase, carried it into the hall. They had argued and fought for the last hour now and he was glad that he would fly to Los Angeles the next morning for record deal negotiations.

The reason for their fight was stupid, he had to admit it. But this time he would not give in.

Daniel left the bathroom, went to bed. Darren could shout and pout as much as he would like to, but Daniel was determined to win this time. Let him be away for two days and we'll see, he thought.

When Darren came into the bedroom, Daniel pretended to sleep.

"Daniel, I know you are still awake. And before you ask- you don't have to get up tomorrow morning and drive me to the airport, thank you. I'll call a cab."

Daniel stared at the wall. "Okay."

"Good night."

"Good night."

The next morning Darren got up, showered, brushed his teeth, dressed. He looked at Daniel. Wake him up? Start the stress all over again? No.

He called the cab, took his jacket.

Went into the bedroom again, kissed Daniel briefly on the cheek.

"Danny?"

"Hmm.."

"I'm leaving. I'll call you, okay?"

"'kay."

Darren left the house. His anger had faded and he decided to really call Daniel from Los Angeles.

Daniel let out a deep sigh. He had been awake all the time, waiting for Darren to say something... All right... They would talk when Darren would be back.

With closed eyes Darren sat on the back seat of the cab. His plane would take off in one hour -- he would make it on time. He would be at the airport in twenty minutes.

The cab driver turned on the radio.

"...Hey, I know we play the new version every day here on your favourite radio station but now- here's the original! Garth Brooks with 'If Tomorrow Never Comes'. Relax and enjoy it, folks..."

Darren smiled. Great song. Silently he sang along, and as always in love songs he replaced every "she" with a "he".

"Sometimes late at night
I lie awake and watch him sleeping
He's lost in peaceful dreams
So I turn out the lights and lay there in the dark
And the thought crosses my mind
If I never wake up in the morning
Would he ever doubt the way I feel
About him in my heart..."

Suddenly Darren had tears in his eyes. Would he?

"If tomorrow never comes
Will he know how much I loved him?
Did I try in every way to show him every day
That he's my only one
And if my time on earth were through
And he must face this world without me
Is the love I gave him in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes..."

Darren wiped his eyes. Was his love enough? Did he really try to show Daniel every day how much he loved him?

"'Cause I've lost loved ones in my life
Who never knew how much I loved them
Now I live with the regret
That my true feelings for them never were revealed
So I made a promise to myself
To say each day how much he means to me
And avoid that circumstance
Where there's no second chance to tell him how I feel..."

Darren touched the cab driver's shoulder. "Please drive back."

"If tomorrow never comes
Will he know how much I loved him?
Did I try in every way to show him every day
That he's my only one
And if my time on earth were through
And he must face this world without me
Is the love I gave him in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes..."

He paid the driver. Carried his suitcase upstairs again.

"So tell that someone that you love
Just what you're thinking of
If tomorrow never comes..."

"Danny?"

Daniel had fallen asleep again and woke up now by the soft touch of a hand on his shoulder.

He turned around.

"Darren?!"

Looked at the clock.

"What are you doing here?"

He sat up, touched Darren's cheek. "You cried! What happened?"

Darren swallowed.

"I want to say... I am sorry. I am sorry I was so stubborn, I am sorry for our fight..."

Daniel's eyes widened. "It was not your fault alone... Oh Darren..."

He opened his arms. "Come..."

Darren's shoulders were shaking when he fell into Daniel's arms.

"And I love you, Daniel."

Daniel smiled, caressed his back. "I know, Baby... I love you, too..."

He kissed Darren's cheek. "I am sorry, too..."

They held each other tight.

"What about your plane, Darren..."

"I'll take the next one. In four hours."

Daniel let his fingers run through Darren's hair. "Then why don't you go down to the bakery and get us some fresh rolls and we have breakfast together?"

"Oh great idea!"

Darren let out a deep sigh of relief. "Daniel..."

He took Daniel's hands into his own. "Let us never ever do this again. Let us never part, never even fall asleep without making it up again. What if something happens to you or to me while I am away..."

He shivered.

Daniel raised his hands to his lips, kissed them. "Shhh... You are right... You are so right..."

Darren smiled. "I'll get the rolls, you make coffee, okay?"

"Great!"

A few hours later.

Clothes all over the bedroom floor.

"Darren, now you'll miss this plane, too..."

"Mmm... Don't care..."

"So tell that someone that you love
Just what you're thinking of
If tomorrow never comes..."
